ORIGIN
Situated in Southeast Asia, Myanmar is a country with a rich cultural history and much of its land lies within the ‘bean belt’ close to the Tropic of Cancer. Coffee was first introduced in 1885 by the British East India Company, when missionaries and traders established some small farms around the city of Pyin-Oo-Lwin. Although coffee has been grown in the country for more than two centuries, it is now starting to capture the attention of the specialty coffee community as a country with huge potential due its fertile soils and favourable climate.
PRODUCER
Cultivated and harvested by smallholder producers on the Moe Htet Estate, this coffee is grown amongst other cash crops such as avocado, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, banana, tea and macadamia trees. Under the leadership Mr. U Thint Lwin, the Mandalay Coffee Group (MCG) buys selectively-picked ripe red cherries during the harvest period from December to March. This naturally processed coffee is a result of an initiative launched by the group in 2015 which provides finance and training to producers in the processing of sun-dried coffee on patios and raised beds. It is a single variety lot of the famous SL28 variety which was developed by Scott Labs in the 1930s that transformed the flavour profile of coffee cultivation in Kenya.
ROAST
Sourced directly through our friends at Typica who assist with shipping and logistics, we love this coffee for its delicate aroma and refreshing taste profile. Roasted lightly for filter, the genetic heritage of SL28 variety brings a vibrant tartaric acidity into the cup with bright notes of lemongrass complemented by fruity flavours that remind us of the tropical fruit guava. There is also a pleasant raisin sweetness which endures in the creamy finish. Perfect for a range of filter brew methods.
